SUMMER 2007 NEWSLETTER AND SPECIAL OFFERS

This has been the best July weather wise since we moved here in 2002. We have had sun almost every day and 70 degree weather has been common. We even had some brief showers which has kept everything green and lush.

The Mendocino Music Festival was a great success. We attended several events and continue to marvel at the talent the event attracts.

SUMMER SPECIALS

RoomFor those of you who think it is impossible to find a room in Mendocino during July and August I have good news. From July 22-26, July 29-Aug 2nd and August 26-30, we are a little light and have rooms available. So if you mention this newsletter, we will give you 20% off at the Whitegate Inn only for those dates. This does not apply to existing reservations and cannot be combined with any other specials or packages. Be impetuous. Get away to the cool, in every sense, coast. There is still time.

As a reminder, if you are planning a winter visit, please ask for our winter specials which are good Nov. through April, holidays and weekends excluded.

EVENTS

I think we can never over advertise the wonderful events we have all year around. There is one which has a special place in our heart though because our innkeeper Sandy's husband is the famous sculptor John Fisher. John is doing one of his outdoor sculptures at the art center. It's called Reconstruction thru Deconstruction and it runs thru Sept. 29th. See how a larger than life sculpture is created.

Events which were previously highlighted can be found on our web site under archived newsletters. But in general we have many activities for all ages in and around Mendocino. Biking, canoes, kayaking, golf, fishing, diving, horseback riding and hiking are for the more active travelers. There is also the Skunk Train, the Botanical Gardens and the numerous State Parks to round out any stay. Call us for more information.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: Rhubarb Coffee Cake

One of my seasonable favorites is Rhubarb Coffee Cake. I even grow the rhubarb which satisfies the inner farmer in me. I have to credit Beth and Alan Spring who gave me this recipe at the Friday Mendocino Farmers Market and who sold me the rhubarb until mine came in. We usually bake two at a time and serve one at Abigail's and one at the Whitegate. I don't bother to peel the rhubarb, just cut it into approximately 1/4 inch chunks. The coffee cake can be frozen but they are better eaten fresh.

Coffee and CakeIngredients:
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 beaten egg
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp soda
1 cup buttermilk
3 cups chopped rhubarb
1 tsp vanilla

For the Topping:
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar

Directions:
Cream the butter and sugar, then add the egg and beat well.
Sift dry ingredients and add the buttermilk alternately, a bit at a time. Add to creamed mixture.
Gently fold in the rhubarb and vanilla.
Pour into a 9 X 12 baking pan which has been sprayed with Pam or something similar.
Sprinkle top with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon.
Bake in 350 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until toothpick test comes up clean.
Let cool and cut into desirable servings.
